"The Bura People"

The Bura people are an ethnic group primarily found in northeastern Nigeria, especially in Borno and Adamawa States.The Bura are considered part of the Chadic speaking peoples, belonging to the Afroasiatic language family.Oral traditions and linguistic evidence suggest they have inhabited the Biu Plateau and surrounding areas for centuries.They are often linked to the Nok culture or similar early Iron Age civilizations, as some archaeological findings in their territory such as terracotta figurines and iron tools suggest advanced cultural development.Historically, the Bura people lived in clan based communities and were organized into small chiefdoms or kingdoms.One of the prominent political structures was the Biu Kingdom, where the Bura played a significant role. The kingdom eventually evolved into the Biu Emirate after Islamic influence spread through the region.

Traditionally, the Bura practiced ancestor worship and believed in a supreme deity, though Islam and Christianity have become widespread among them today.

They are known for their rich cultural expressions including music, dance, and art, especially terracotta sculptures which are archaeologically significant.

During British colonialization,the Bura region was incorporated into the Northern Nigeria protectorate.

The British often ruled through existing local rulers, reinforcing the authority of the Biu Emirate.

In the post independence era, the Bura have continued to maintain their cultural identity while integrating into modern Nigerian society.
