#by Tsodi Priscilla Stephen

Corruption is the abuse of power or position for personal gain. It involves dishonest or unethical behavior, such as bribery, embezzlement, or nepotism. Corruption can occur in government, business, or other institutions. It undermines trust, distorts markets, and hinders development. Corruption affects everyone, but its impact is often felt most by vulnerable populations. It is a complex issue with deep-rooted causes.

Corruption in Nigeria is a deeply ingrained issue that affects various aspects of society.

There are activities and issues that trigger corruption in Nigeria

1.Tribalism and nepotism: Friends and family seeking favors from government officials can lead to corrupt practices.

2.Greed and ostentatious lifestyle: The desire for wealth and material possessions drives individuals to engage in corrupt activities.

3.Weak institutions: Lack of effective governance and oversight enables corruption to thrive.

The Effects of corruption on the citizens

1.Economic loss: Nigeria has lost over $400 billion to corruption since its independence.

2.Uneven distribution of wealth: Oil and gas revenues, which account for over 90% of Nigeria's export revenues, are not evenly distributed, with Lagos State benefiting disproportionately.

3.Vote rigging and electoral irregularities: Corruption in elections undermines the democratic process.

Notable corruption cases in Nigeria

1.Halliburton scandal: Involved the Abdusalami administration and implicated several high-ranking officials.

2.Malabu Oil International scandal: Involved the sale of an oil block and led to allegations of corruption against government officials.

3.$2.2 billion Excess Crude Oil Account scandal: Funds were allegedly withdrawn illegally, with some used for President Goodluck Jonathan's reelection campaign.

Efforts to Combat Corruption

1.Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC): Has convicted over 600 individuals on corruption charges since 2015.

2.Muhammadu Buhari's administration: Launched anti-corruption initiatives, including the prosecution of judges and top military officers.
